Aveiro Defense Week brings together defence and security stakeholders, researchers, companies, and students for a compact programme of demos, dialogue, and hands-on problem-solving. Alongside networking and technology showcases, the week features a Hackathon where multidisciplinary teams tackle real-world challenges and connect with mentors from industry and academia. During the same week, a coordinated measurement campaign organized in the framework of a NATO STO activity will also take place, aiming to acquire drone signals in an urban environment.
The VIP Defense Day offers a close look at innovative defence and security initiatives and the chance to engage directly with experts, companies, and the teams involved in the exercise. The programme includes discussion sessions, a technology exhibition, and recognition of young talent. Its featured debate, “The use of drones in defence: advantages and countermeasures”, brings specialists together to examine the growing role of drones in defence operations, covering both their benefits and the protective measures required.

The Teatro Aveirense, inaugurated in 1881 with a performance by the Teatro D. Maria II company, quickly became a key cultural hub in Aveiro. Its programming was diverse, and in 1912 it expanded to include cinema, which became an integral part of its identity. Recognized for its cultural significance, it was officially classified as a Property of Public Interest in 2002.
Over its history, the theater has undergone several renovations to adapt to modern needs. Major refurbishments occurred in 1919, the late 1940s, and most notably between 2000 and 2003, when architect João Carreira redesigned the venue under municipal management. Reopening in October 2003, it emerged as a fully modernized municipal theater with professional staff and state-of-the-art facilities, remaining under the management of TEMA until 2016..
The Hackathon runs alongside the drone-measurement event during Aveiro Tech Week, turning the city into a living lab for defence tech. Teams apply AI to real operational challenges in drone detection and classification, working with curated datasets and starter Python resources, and getting hands-on mentorship from researchers and practitioners. It's a fast, practical sprint designed to turn ideas into models you can test.
Participation is open to UA-registered entrants, in teams of 1-3. After registration (10-18 Sep), there's a kickoff and build phase (from 19 Sep), model evaluation (1 Oct), and on-site testing for the top teams (6-8 Oct), culminating in the awards on 9 Oct at Teatro Aveirense. Prizes for the top three teams, plus great visibility with industry, academia, and stakeholders.
